Mini Jet Boat for Rivers

Postby Rob B » Thu Mar 03, 2016 7:37 am

Like it or not, they are becoming more popular. Saw the first one on Smith Lake last year and got to take a ride up Crooked Creek. It was extremely fun but certainly would have been scary to encounter in my kayak :P

We had to deal with those on Hell's Canyon in Idaho in the summer of 2012. We were doing a 4-day, self-support kayak trip and multiple times found ourselves scrambling to get out of their way because they can't throttle down or change their intended line much or they would get trashed (we had flows that ranged from 20,000-50,000 cfs, you can imagine what those waves/holes could do to a sideways jetboat). While it did look extremely fun to be the person driving one, it also kinda ruined any feeling of wilderness in what would have otherwise been a very remote river canyon. Not to mention that we had fully loaded boats and having to change our line unexpectedly in the middle of big, long rapids to get out of their way wasn't exactly easy. Its really the only time I've encountered them, but left me with a pretty negative impression.

I agree with Adam on this one. They are loud and obnoxious and really only suitable for very high volume rivers with very few rocks/obstacles. Bang the bottom of these on a few rocks and you'll be trying to salvage one from the bottom of a river. There arealso major issues finding a place to launch them. I hope they don't catch on.f

His boat has a replaceable polymer skid plate on the bottom rear half, which means he can boof it and smash rocks with no remorse. The price and extreme risk of danger/damage from an engine failure in swift water will probably keep a lot of people away from them.
